It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?: Another NaNo Excerpt

I am still having trouble juggling NaNo and reading for pleasure, so lately I have done no reading.  Which trust me, sucks!

So for today’s Monday reading, I will instead give you another excerpt from my NaNo novel.

“Shhh…Lola,” her mother said patting her daughter’s head.  “Nothing happened, everything is fine.  You just had a bad dream.”

Lola’s eyes widened.  What was her mother saying?  Nothing was fine and it all was not a dream.  The sound of the gun and her mother’s pleas still echoed in her mind, but her mother would not tell her what had happened.

Lola watched as her mom, her only parent and stable support, continued to rock back and forth, the blood from her nose dripping heavier and her sobs becoming short and quick as if her mother was hyperventilating.

“Mom?” Lola asked, the sight too much to bear.  “Are you OK?  What is going on?”

Lola’s mother just continued rocking, bleeding and sobbing while the night outside turned slowly into day.  Lola sat in silence next to her parent, her brain and ears finally blocking everything out.  She watched her mother’s sanity leave, Lola thinking that maybe Ted and the police had taken it with them.

It’s Monday! What Are you Reading?: NaNo Novel Excerpt

I have many books on my TBR list but it’s hard to keep up my word count in NaNo, let alone read while I’m trying to write 50,000 words!

So for today’s Monday reading, I will instead give you an excerpt from my NaNo novel.

Lola loved these days with her father, the days where they roamed the streets, finding neat treasures that connected the present to the past.  Because the Great Havoc lasted for 7 years, seven years which consisted of people fleeing, leaving anything they couldn’t carry behind, the government did not bother to clean up the mess that was left after those long years.

Thirty-three years later, and the streets were still littered with things.  Mostly new trash though, and yes, the new things were trash, however if you looked deep enough into old abandoned buildings, or trekked to places where no one had been in years, then you would still find artifacts from the Great Havoc, all those years ago.

They continued on walking, occasionally stepping over sleeping bodies wrapped in bulky sleeping bags, resting over steaming manholes, trying to stay warm during the chilly morning.  Lola’s father held his daughter’s hand tight, and she squeezed his back, trying to tell him that she appreciated his protection.

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?: Say You’re One of Them

It’s Monday!  What Are You Reading?  by  Book Journey

I am still reading Say You’re One of Them by Uwem Akpan.

With NaNo, it’s quite hard for me to concentrate on any book while I’m constantly thinking of my story, so it’s been a slow reading process for me.  But reading this book has definitely been a nice break from writing.  Plus, it’s give me inspiration to write!  It really is a good book!  :)

 

I will be reviewing this book but may not have the review up until after NaNo.  We’ll see.

It’s Monday!  What Are You Reading?  by  Book Journey

 

I told myself I wouldn’t read days before or during NaNo.  I wanted to concentrate completely on my writing, and not get distracted with another story.

However, sure enough, I picked up a book and started reading, which means I now have to finish it.  I guess it’s better to read during “break time” than to watch TV, plus, it’s a superb book!

So I am proud to say that currently, even though NaNo starts tonight at midnight, I am reading Say You’re One of Them by Uwem Akpan.

I will be reviewing this book but may not have the review up until after NaNo.  We’ll see.

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?

Currently, I am reading Becoming a Writer by Dorothea Brande.  

I got it on one of the last weekends Borders was open and honestly, I don’t like it.  

It’s a 1980′s re-copy of her original 1934 publication, with a foreword by John Gardner, and while it is cute/funny that she says “and if you’ve learnt how to use a typewriter or would rather write with quill to paper” and things like that, it isn’t what I was expecting at all – and I really don’t know what I was expecting!

Currently I’m reading Off the Grid by Nick Rosen.  It was a little slow in the beginning and lost some of my attention but it has picked up by the 5th chapter and I’m excited to continue and finish it.  

The reviews on it on Amazon aren’t the best and I will be posting my review when I’m finished.
