He got a hold of GTE supervisor Lisa Jefferson, and told her that one passenger had been killed and that the passengers were planning to jump the hijackers and try and land the plane safely.  His last words, according to Jefferson, were “Are you guys ready? OK, let’s roll”.

The plane ended up crashing into a field in Pennsylvania.

~ Holidays:

- Thanksgiving -

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is an American holiday which is celebrated on the 4th Thursday in November.  It periodically falls on November 24th, which it does this year, 2011.

It started during the Civil War when Abe Lincoln declared a day of thanksgiving to be celebrated on Thursday, November 26.

The first Thanksgiving feast lasted for 3 days, which fed 13 Pilgrims and 90 Native Americans.  The “First Thanksgiving” consisted of giving thanks to God for guiding them to the New World, and the some of the foods which were served were fish, wild birds, beans, and many others.

Football, parades, and a big dinner celebrated with family are some typical traditions of Thanksgiving.  However, many families have their own traditions, which makes Thanksgiving a day to look forward to.

A Striped Thanksgiving

The biggest blessings seem to come in the smallest packages.

Five-year-old Kirana, a Sumatran tiger at the Chester Zoo in the U.K., gave birth on October 21st to three baby cubs, and on Tuesday, October 22nd, mother and triplets made their big debut.

These three births were very special, not only because they are just so darn adorable, but because they may be one of the last glimmers of hope for this particular species of tigers.  There are less than 400 Sumatran tiger left in the wild in their home of Indonesia, and have been claimed critically endangered.

 ’”It’s estimated that there are just a few hundred left in the wild and only around 7% of their original habitat remains, which is why these triplets are so, so important,” Tim Rowlands, the zoo’s curator of mammals, told Sky News.’

So, while the zoo still does not know the sex of the cubs – since they’re still too small – these three cubs could be the future for the Sumatran species.  It seems that we should all be thankful for something this Thanksgiving.

Booking Through Thursday: Thankful

Q:

What book or author are you most thankful to have discovered?
Have you read everything they’ve written? Reread them?
Why do you appreciate them so much?

A:

I discovered a little book titled: The Perks of Being a Wallflower some many years back, maybe when I was 15 or so.  I randomly spotted it in a small store in Lexington, Michigan, and for some odd reason, I just had to have it.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

That book turned out to become very special to me.  I have reread it numerous times, almost memorizing the words where I don’t necessarily need to be looking at the pages to know what’s going on.  The characters became very important in my life, and I would sit up at night “talking” to them as if they were my best friends.

I would like to say that the book changed my life, but I really don’t know if it did or not.  All I know is that it was one of my favorite books, still is, and will probably be a book I will pass down to my kids.

However, unfortunately, like Hollywood does with all good things, they are making a movie out of my favorite book.  You will not see me in any of the theaters watching that movie, though.  That book is too special and dear to me to ruin it with someone else’s images.  But please, if you see the movie, just promise me that you WILL read the book before seeing the film.

So, today, on Thanksgiving, I am thankful for my favorite book, The Perks of Being a Wallflower.  Thank you Stephen Chbosky, whom I have not read another book by, for writing this one special book and allowing me the pleasure of reading it.

Happy Thanksgiving Bookies!

:)

Eating Your Creativity

Since Thanksgiving is tomorrow and there will be feasts of yummy food to share, I thought I would share this article I found on Huff Post Books.

Writer Wednesday: 9 Types of Brain Food for Writers

We all know that some food is good for us, and others are bad.  But did you know that some can even help support brain function and make us more creative, helping us to write better?!  No joke.  And here are some of those foods.

~ Antioxidants:  Fruits and vegetables high in antioxidants help your creative juices to flow.  Blueberries are supposedly the most powerful.  Mmmm…Don’t those berries below look good enough to eat?!

~ Green Tea:  Many writers either require a steaming cup of coffee or a hot mug of tea next to them as they type away.  Me, I’m a tea girl.  And whoever else is also, you will be happy to know that tea helps the brain and mind age better.  Not to mention that “moderate amounts of caffeine are said to boost concentration”.  So drink up!

~ Glucose:  When you ingest sugar, your body turns that sugar into glucose.  Glucose helps the brain concentrate and increases alertness.  So go ahead, divulge a little – but not too much!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
These are just some of the foods that help us writers with our brain activity.  To view the full list and to see how each helps you as a writer, visit the article’s link above.
So, Happy Thanksgiving all, and I provided you with this list so that even though you feast out tomorrow, you can still know that what you are eating (if you include these in your Thanksgiving meal), you are still exercising your brain for the day after Thanksgiving.  The day I know you all writers will be back to writing!
:)
Top Ten Tuesday: Authors I Want at My Thanksgiving Dinner
Top Ten by The Broke and the Bookish
I have just found this Tuesday meme from The Broke and the Bookish.  It looks fun, so it shall now be added as another one of my weekly memes which I will participate in!
Top 10 Authors I Want at My Thanksgiving Dinner:
J.K. Rowling - Uhm, who wouldn’t have her over for Thanksgiving dinner?!  In between shoveling food in my mouth and stuffing my face with stuffing, I would be asking her all about how she came up with the idea for Harry Potter, who her personal favorite character is, and all about her writing habits, motivations and inspirations.  Oh, I would pummel her to death with questions and shout outs of “I’m your biggest fan!”
J.K. Rowling
Susan Orlean - While I still have yet to read any of her books (they are all on my TBR list), I feel like I know Ms. Orlean.  Her website is amazing, and if Adaptation is one of my favorite movies, and it’s based off of her book, The Orchid Thief, then duh, I will love her.  Plus, she seems like she would bring some humor to the dinner table.
Susan Orlean
Wade RouseI would invite him for my mom as much as for me.  We both love Wade Rouse and fell in love with him through his book, At Least in the City, Someone Would Hear Me Scream, and have since went on to read his other books that kept us laughing out loud.  Not only is he gay, and would bring his partner Gary to the dinner, but he would definitely keep us all laughing through the night!
Stephen KingDo I need to say anything more?!  Yeah, I didn’t think so.
Stephen King
Jane GoodallNot only for her books, but also for the animal lover, supporter, and researcher (I don’t like the word scientist) that she is, Jane Goodall would definitely be invited to my Thanksgiving dinner.  I would question her endlessly about her times and experiences with the  chimpanzees, and I would obviously force her to become my new best friend.  :)
Jane Goodall
Yann MartelLife of Pi is one of my favorite books so of course Mr. Martel would be invited.  I will of course ask him how he came up with such a brilliant idea, and I would probably sit him next to J.K. Rowling.
Yann Martel
Nellie BlyMany people don’t know Nellie Bly (that was her pen name), but as you can see in my About section, she is one of my role models.  She was one of the first female journalists and would stop at nothing to get the story, even committing herself to an insane asylum which she writes about in her book: Ten Days in a Mad House.  She would be of course seated next to me and Jane Goodall, so both could complement one another on what pioneers each were in their own fields.
Nellie  Bly
Gary PaulsenI love this man.  I first found out about him when I did a project in school on the Iditarod (the Alaskan dog sled race), but then I discovered his books and fell in love with them.  He has had such an amazing life, and his adventures and experiences radiate throughout his books.  I would probably sit him next to Susan Orlean because they both have had some cool experiences.
Gary Paulsen
Suzanne CollinsI would invite her and place her next to J.K. Rowling and Yann Martel.  Of course I would ask her how she came up with The Hunger Games trilogy idea and I would discuss non-stop with her about her books.  Yes, Ms. Collins would definitely be invited!
Suzanne Collins
Bill BrysonOf course we need a hilarious travel guru at the table.  Bill Bryson would complete the entire dinner.
